Nvidia announced on Thursday that it will buy artificial intelligence startup Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, a massive bet by the chipmaker to expand the reach of open-source AI technology.

Acquiring Hugging Face will give the chipmaker access to a platform developers use to collaborate, test and share AI tools, potentially providing valuable insight and data that could help it narrow the technology gap with top American and Chinese labs.

The deal comes as Nvidia ramps up efforts to develop open-weight models and related services.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said that with Hugging Face, the chipmaker will "expand access to AI for developers and institutions worldwide."

Nvidia is announcing its new Personal AI Router (PAIR), a free tool that syncs up your home computers for tackling local AI inference tasks with tools like Ollama and LM Studio.

At IFA 2026, Nvidia and its partners showed off the first RTX Spark-powered laptops and mini PCs, designed to run AI models right on your computer.

It works across Windows, Linux and macOS to speed up processing.

Nvidia chief Jensen Huang urged G20 ministers on Wednesday to build more data centers to support the artificial intelligence revolution, and warned that leaders who talk up the technology's dangers risk leaving their countries behind.
