Texas Hill Country was unprepared for the July 4 nightmare flash floods that killed at least 120 people, with 173 still missing.

Kerr County officials say death toll has risen to 96 due to the Hill Country floods, including 60 adults and 36 children.

Eight days after devastating flash floods swept through Central Texas, the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country announced Thursday it has raised more than $30 million through the Kerr County Flood Relief Fund and distributed $5 million in initial grants to support recovery efforts.

A growing wall of flowers and photographs honoring the victims of last weekend’s deadly floods has been taking shape in Kerrville over the last 48 hours.

Officials in Kerr County, where the majority of the deaths from the July 4 flash floods occurred, have yet to detail what actions they took in the early hours of the disaster.

The same region of Texas that experienced catastrophic, deadly flooding over the Fourth of July weekend also experienced massive flooding in the past. A 1987 flood in Kerr County resulted in the death of 33 people,
