A tsunami has hit coastal areas of Russia’s Kuril Islands and Japan’s large northern island of Hokkaido after a powerful, 8.8-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Russia early Wednesday.

The quake comes days after an 8.8-magnitude tremor in the region triggered tsunami alerts across Asia and the Pacific

A 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck Russia’s Kuril Islands on Sunday, following a series of aftershocks since the record 8.7 quake on July 30. No tsunami alert has been issued. Authorities remain on alert as seismic activity continues in the region.
