Portions of West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania were under a new tornado watch issued on Sunday by the National Weather Service, as the death toll from storms rose to at least 34 people in six states since Friday.

A swarm of dust storms and tornadoes tore across the southern United States over the weekend, killing at least 35 people and leaving behind wrecked communities.

Over the past 24 hours, more than 40 reported tornadoes have swept across eight states in the Midwest and South -- and the dangerous severe weather threat continues. The eight states with reported tornadoes in the past day are Alabama, Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Illinois, Indiana and Tennessee.

Cumberland, Hoke, Moore, Harnett, Lee, Sampson, Scotland and Richmond counties are among 11 central N.C. counties under a tornado watch until 2 p.m. Sunday. The watch was later extended to an additional 20 counties, imcluding Chatham.

On Saturday at 7:47 p.m. the National Weather Service issued a tornado watch in effect until Sunday at 3 a.m. for Autauga, Bibb, Blount, Calhoun, Chilton, Coosa, Dallas, Elmore, Etowah, Jefferson, Lowndes,
