While President Donald Trump is in the midst of ramping up the federal government’s efforts to deport millions of people currently residing in the U.S. unlawfully, Republican lawmakers in Massachusetts say it’s time to change the state’s practice of ignoring immigration detainers filed by federal officials.

Recent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations to detain undocumented immigrants across the country, including in Boston, have renewed in Massachusetts the debate over what are known as ICE detainers.

The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement is carrying out raids across the state, including in Houston and in Galveston.
