Nearly two months after the hasty and controversial birth of “Alligator Alcatraz,” a federal judge has slammed the brakes on the operation, ruling that no more detainees can be housed at the remote migrant detention camp deep in the marshy wetlands of the Everglades.

A federal judge ordered an indefinite halt to further construction or expansion at "Alligator Alcatraz," in a setback for the Trump administration and Florida officials.

Florida’s ad hoc immigration lockup Alligator Alcatraz is facing yet another legal complaint charging abuse of power and legal prerogative. The American Civil Liberties Union, ACLU of Florida, Community Justice Project, and National Immigrant Justice Center are suing the state of Florida on behalf of inmates.

The findings raise questions about the DeSantis administration’s vetting of the companies that received Alligator Alcatraz contracts.
