ICE arrests illegal immigrant from Azerbaijan with multiple convictions including animal cruelty and drug crimes. Suspect remains in federal custody.

MERIDIAN, Idaho — Tensions are running high among Latino neighbors in the Treasure Valley this week after federal law enforcement officials, including ICE, took two confirmed individuals into custody in Canyon and Ada Counties.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on Thursday appear to have run over a man’s foot during an arrest in Vancouver, according to the man’s brother, witness videos and local police. Vancouver police are investigating the incident based on the videos, they said late Friday.

An Afghan man, Jaan Shah Safi, was arrested in Waynesboro, Virginia, by ICE agents. Safi entered the U.S. in 2021 under Operation Allies Welcome, a program for vulnerable Afghans. The arrest follows a separate incident where another Afghan refugee was charged with shooting two National Guard members.

At least 10 Afghan residents were arrested since Monday during "routine appointments" at the Sacramento ICE field office.

ICE arrests multiple individuals in Southern Arizona Friday morning. The Immigration agency served 16 search warrants with the IRS.

More than 450 people were arrested by ICE at the Benton County Jail from Jan. 1 through Oct. 15, according to ICE arrest data from the University of California Berkeley Deportation Data Project analyzed by AP. That’s more than 1.5 arrests per day in the county of roughly 300,000 people.

A federal ICE supervisor also testified he created and signed arrest warrants after-the-fact for people already arrested without warrants.
