Officers fatally shot Andrew Engel, 26, after responding to call of a man who was reportedly suicidal and in possession of a knife

Giovanni “Gio” Tilotta, who operates a law enforcement and military supply business, was convicted of three felonies in 2022 related to a wide-ranging corruption case involving a former sheriff’s captain named Marco Garmo.

The incident occurred shortly before 7 p.m. Jan. 13, when a resident of an apartment complex in the 1100 block of E Street made an emergency call to report that his roommate was suicidal, according to the San Diego Police Department.

An investigation has been launched into an in-custody death that happened while a man was being detained following an altercation at a downtown San Diego bar Saturday night.

Officers responding to reports of an altercation and gunfire at a residence in the 1600 block of Chalcedony Street about 10:15 p.m. Sunday found 31-year-old Richard Herrman outside the condo with a gun, according to the San Diego Police Department.

A mandatory evacuation order was issued Tuesday afternoon after a new brush fire, named the "Friars Fire," broke out near Fashion Valley Mall in San Diego.
