Acai’s dark purple berries are from a palm tree found throughout South America and are touted as an antioxidant-rich food source that some nutritionists believe can protect cells from damage, according to WebMD. Proponents say the berries are richer in antioxidants than cranberry, raspberry, blackberry, strawberry or blueberries.

Sigh. There’s yet another Trader Joe’s recall to be aware of. The chain just announced that anyone who purchased one particular frozen meal should discard it out of an “abundance of caution” for potential plastic contamination.

A representative for Trader Joe’s told Nexstar on Thursday that the frozen product is not currently available at stores amid the recall.

Trader Joe's is telling its customers to throw away or return the grocery store chain's organic acai bowls because they possibly contain plastic. The Monrovia, California-headquartered company announced the recall on Feb. 14 "out of an abundance of caution." Trader Joe's said the product "may contain foreign material (plastic)."

In 2024, Trader Joe’s was plagued by a record number of recalls. Multiple frozen items were deemed unsafe due to foreign plastics, or other materials, like metals, lurking in the meals. Some customers complained they found rocks in a rice pilaf meal. The company had recalls over listeria concerns, salmonella, and more.

Tuna sold in 26 states and in Washington, D.C., was recalled over concerns that it may have been contaminated. The stores affected include Trader Joe’s, Genova, Van Camp’s and H-E-B.
