Janis Joplin was born circa January 19, 1943, in Port Arthur, Texas. She grew up craving freedom. By 1963, she roamed San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury scene. Her raw blues voice shook the walls of the Avalon Ballroom. In 1967, she soared with Big Brother and the Holding Company at Monterey Pop. Fame hit hard. Whiskey, heroin, and heartbreak followed. She left the band in 1968. Formed the Kozmic Blues Band. Recorded Pearl in Los Angeles, 1970. On October 4 that year, she died at 27 in the Landmark
