Little hands learning, growing independence, and building confidence—one playful moment at a time. 💛 This National Therapeutic Recreation Month, we’re celebrating the power of purposeful play in Occupational Therapy. Through fun, goal-driven activities, kids strengthen fine motor skills, sensory regulation, coordination, and the daily living skills they need for dressing, feeding, writing, and more. And the best part? It all happens right at home—where routines and real progress come together.

Why are we fragmenting coral? Coral propagation through fragmentation allows us to grow more corals, faster. At Keys Marine Laboratory , our team selects healthy coral colonies and cuts them into smaller fragments, or “frags.” Each frag is secured to a base and placed in tanks where it can recover and start growing new tissue. After this healing period, the corals are moved to our ocean nurseries, where they continue to grow and strengthen until they’re ready for outplanting onto the reef. Throu

This August, Coral Restoration Foundation™ and Shedd Aquarium joined forces in the Florida Keys for a landmark spawning season. Shedd’s Coral Reef II research vessel was moored at our Tavernier Nursery, serving as a floating laboratory for pioneering experiments. Tens of thousands of coral larvae became the foundation for resilience trials, heat-tolerant algae inoculations, and coral stem cell transplants. Together with Shedd, we’re building a future where innovation continues to strengthen cora

How do you restore a reef? One coral at a time. Here’s how: 1️⃣ Harvest from the Nursery – We collect nursery-grown corals ready for outplanting. 2️⃣ Prep the Reef – Algae and debris are cleared to create a stable site. 3️⃣ Secure the Coral – Marine-safe epoxy locks them in place. 4️⃣ A Growing Reef – The corals settle in and begin restoring the ecosystem. Divers with coral restoration group Reef Renewal USA, Inc. are moving healthy, young coral colonies from a shallow coral nursery off Key Largo in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary to deeper, cooler water — a protective measure while ocean temperatures are higher than normal. Raising reef-building coral species is part of the marine sanctuary’s Mission: Iconic Reefs initiative to strengthen and restore seven important Keys reef tracts. 🎥 Mike Zimmer. Can you feel the love? These corals sure can! This week, our team is diving nightly to monitor spawning and collect data with our amazing collaborators. Each event is a vital chance to study how corals reproduce and strengthen reef ecosystems. Spawning week is one of the most exciting and important times for coral science and restoration. Coral reef restoration isn’t just “planting coral back on the reef.” It’s an active, hands-on process used when reefs are so damaged that they can’t recover on their own. Scientists grow corals in ocean-based or land-based nurseries, often by fragmenting healthy corals so they can regrow faster. Once those corals are large and resilient enough, they’re carefully outplanted onto degraded reefs to help rebuild living coral cover and reef structure. But restoration isn’t a silver bullet. What happens if we leave the structure alone long enough for crustose coralline algae (CCA) to cover its surface? This is the question we are curious to answer. Acting as natural cement, coralline algae strengthen the substrate and release chemical cues that encourage coral larvae to settle. Once the surface is fully coated, transplanted corals are more likely to attach faster, as the CCA is already developed. ✨ 🇮🇩 Apa yang terjadi jika kita membiarkan struktur tersebut cukup lama hingga alga

Coral Vita on Instagram: "Restoring reefs is not just about growing corals. It is about helping them survive in a rapidly changing ocean. Through assisted evolution, genotype screening, and selective breeding, we strengthen corals before they ever return to the reef so they can withstand warmer waters and shifting chemistry. This is how restoration becomes a real path forward for coral reefs. #ReefRestorationScience #AssistedEvolution #OceanClimateAction #ReefRecoveryProject #MarineBiologyResear

CORAL GARDENERS on Instagram: "Check out the evolution of our nurseries from when we first began coral gardening in 2017 until now. It’s wild to see how far we’ve come as we’ve experimented with different methods and put our focus on science-driven restoration, using our nurseries as living laboratories to strengthen the resilience of our corals.
