Maryland DNR is using drones to monitor and map movement of Assateague State Park’s dune system that protects the island’s campground and other inland infrastructure. As erosion and sea level rise continue, storms have more and more impact on the dune system. DNR’s Chesapeake and Coastal Service has begun conducting drone flights over the beach twice yearly to collect images from preset points that can be used to develop a 3D model of the landscape across time – – a process known as photogrammet

📰: Winter Survey Takes Stock of the Chesapeake Bay’s Blue Crabs Every year, DNR biologists set out into the Chesapeake Bay in the cold winter months to look for blue crabs. This is because crabs are most dormant during the winter, and this gives them a chance to pull them out of the water to take stock of their population. At 750 random sites throughout the Bay, the team dredges a small area and measures the crabs they find there. It's a quick readjustment for the crabs, and most only just star

50 years ago today, JAWS first hit movie screens. In honor of Steven Spielberg’s epic 1975 film about a great white shark, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources developed the MAWS parody to bring attention to the threat that nonnative blue catfish pose in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. Blue catfish were first introduced to the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem in Virginia in the 1970s. Following significant rains in 2018 and 2019, the invasive species spread throughout Maryland and into t

It's time for spring cleaning 🧹. Fish ladders like this one at Deer Creek allow migratory fish such as shad to navigate up and over dams in the path to their spawning waters. Each spring, DNR staff clears them of debris to ensure fish can get through. Learn about the fish passage program: https://mddnr.info/3FCzDOb | Maryland Department of Natural Resources Fisheries

DNR wildlife biologists visit Washington Monument State Park and demonstrate how they are using machine learning to monitor populations of bats. Maryland's species of bats have suffered significant declines due to the spread of white nose syndrome, a deadly fungal disease, while Allegheny woodrats are endangered in the state. New technology like machine-learning algorithms are helping DNR scientists keep track of these vulnerable populations. The machine-learning software combs through massive a

🦌 When DNR staff were taking a look at the restored wetlands at Wye Island, we found a surprise visitor that was ready for his close-up. This buck had just scared away a big flock of waterfowl that were wading in one of the ponds. He seemed to be following around two does, as white-tailed deer are in the middle of their mating season. Wye Island, located south of the Bay Bridge on the Eastern Shore, is the site of wetlands restoration that attracts thousands of migrating waterfowl every winter.
